The surrounding paddocks while being host to a 9 hole chip and putt golf course, cricket pitch and tennis courts, are also home to the homestead''s sheep and horses. THE HISTORY
Ugbrooke is the original homestead of an 8,479 ha. farm bought in 1882 by Hon.William Clifford. In 1885 he decided to build his main homestead in the Awatere Valley because of the large amount of good agricultural land and to name it Ugbrooke after his family estate in Chudleigh, Devon, England which lives on today. He designed the house and began the building that same year from brick, made and fired on the property. In 1897, under some financial pressure, he sold the farm and partly finished house to the Vavasour family who lovingly completed it to Clifford''s design by 1903. After three generations of ownership and a rich history, the Vavasours decided to sell in the early 1990s. Your hosts,Peter and Alex Stowasser, now welcome guests to this unique residence and take great pleasure in enabling visitors to forget the hustle and bustle of the modern world and step briefly back in time to a more gracious era - to unwind in comfort, explore the region and return again and ....yet again to......
